Grace Bird of Bird of Paradise Design is joining the Elmwood Strip by announcing the opening of her brand new design studio on the corner of Elmwood and Allen. The studio is shared by Christie Nelson, former head of real estate for Buffalo. Buffalo offers an opportunity for Bird to pursue her interests in interior designing as an expert and take on the world by making her contribution to making Queen City better, one design project at one time.
With a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in real property development, Bird’s home design is second nature. When working for architectural firms that specialized in nightclubs, bars, and boutique hotels, an underlying theme started to establish the basis for an interest that would eventually develop into a career.
“The interesting thing is that while I worked for the firms mentioned above, what leaped to me most strongly, despite my training was in design and architecture it was the interior design component.
So, I was aware that I wanted to accomplish in the future, and that’s exactly what I’m doing right now.”
The building, which is set to house her expanding business for design consulting, is the property of Ernst Valery, the major shareholder of SAA | EVI, a national development company. With offices that extend across the upper levels of the building, Bird works on design ideas for the floors.
Bird’s knowledge extends far beyond paint and color matching. She incorporates her skills in architecture into each design and development project.
“Once I’m contacted for an undertaking, I personally with the client to determine the needs of the client. After that, I will personally take measures of the area, and I sketch it out on AutoCAD and Pro Kitchen. I will choose the products that they are required, so basically it’s procurement, design as well as project administration.”
In addition to the technical aspects that she works with, Bird builds a personal relationship with each client. It is an aspect that is crucial in delivering the best possible work. Being present each step of the way gives Bird the ability to tailor her work according to the clients’ needs and requirements.

“You’re taking part in the whole process with me all the time. I’d like to provide an intimate experience where the words you speak are important and what you’re searching for is crucial. This isn’t my goal I’m facilitating your vision. This is a highly individual process, and ultimately an alliance between me and my clients.”
